NORTHFIELD — Calling hours for Allen L. Prior, 67, who died Sunday, July 17, 2011 at his home on Berlin Pond Road will be held today, Thursday, July 21 from 7-9 p.m. at the Kingston Funeral Home in Northfield. Graveside services will be conducted Friday, July 22 at Noon at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center, where full military honors will be accorded.
He was born in West Bridgewater, Vermont on November 4, 1943, the son of Erwin & Lucy (Hunt) Prior.
He is a graduate of Woodstock High School, class of 1961.
He is a United States Marine veteran having served during the Vietnam War, stationed in Okinawa, Japan and Taiwan.
He married Carol Cochrane in Bellows Falls on January 24, 1967.
Allen was a Vermont State Trooper for a few years, working out of the Rockingham Barracks. He later entered the insurance business and was a claims adjuster and manager for The Hartford in Rochester, NH and Springfield, VT, and later, Vermont Mutual Insurance in Montpelier, where he was Vice President of Claims, retiring in 2003, after 25 years of service.
He was a member of the Montpelier Elks Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Montpelier, American Legion Post in Montpelier, and the Northfield Country Club. He often volunteered as a driver to help fellow veterans get to the VA for medical visits. He enjoyed working at the Northfield Country Club Pro Shop as well as maple sugaring, bowling, hunting, cutting wood, snowmobiling and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Prior of Northfield; four children, Eric Prior, Glenn Prior, both of Northfield, Robin Thomaston of Edwards Air Force Base in California, Gary Prior of Glen Allen, VA; three siblings, Doris Dean of Bridgewater, Betty Putnam of Plymouth, LeRoy Prior of Mendon; 10 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Berlin, VT 05641 or the American Diabetes Assoc., Burlington VT-NY Office, One Kennedy Drive, Suite L8, So. Burlington, VT 05403.
The Kingston Funeral Home in Northfield is handling the arrangements.
