Mark Laskowski from Tunbridge called last night to share his excitement about The Flag, which has been restored to its place in the White River, just at the edge of Sharon Village. The creator of this eye-catching spot for our National Flag is Dave Renn, a Navy veteran of the Vietnam era who lives across from the river. He says the idea came to him right after his daughter entered the service following 9/11/2001. He took 200 feet of extension cord, a hammer drill and with his boat went to the best rock. The flag pole fits very tightly and has been admired by many ever since it establishment there.
When the threat of Irene loomed, Mr. Renn went to get the flag and brought it home. Since the landslide across the river created quite a water wall, which hit that area of the village, his home was also damaged. Two fellows, Ed and Bill, stopped by to help him load his damaged TV into the dump load. He asked if they would put the flag back up in its home on the river. As many have noticed and enjoyed the flag now waves proudly in a much wider river and can be seen from further up and down Route 14.
The Sharon community keeps Tom Paronto in mind as struggles to recover in the hospital in Burlington. Tom’s home was destroyed during that recent Irene storm and it is the second time in its history for the River to win against that particular home.
Folks continued to recover and deal with how to function following the Irene disaster. If you have a particular need or something to share, please do call and we will do what we can through this column. The need will go on and folks relocate and restore their.
Congratulations to Dave Bollinger who won the quilt, which was raffled this year by the North Pomfret Ladies Circle. Dave had long been purchasing tickets and expressing his desire to have one of these cozy circle made quilts. The next meeting of the group will be at the Parsonage in North Pomfret to prepare a package for the orphanage in Uganda.
For those who still can be nighthawks, the Orionids meteor shower is expected to peak next week on the night between the 20th and 21st. Maybe we will be lucky and have clear skies.
