NORTH HARTLAND — Private family services were held for Helga Brauns Alexander, 93, who died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011.
She was born in 1917 in Berlin-Friedenau, Germany. She grew up under the care of foster parents in Oslo, Norway where she was schooled.
She worked as a switchboard operator, bookkeeper and payroll clerk and as the secretary for two lawyers.
In 1944, she was in Austria with a field relief station aiding refugees fleeing from the advancing Soviet Army. She left on the last train from that country one day before the Soviet troops arrived.
In 1947, she married Adrian Alexander in Bavaria. In 1948, she came to the United States and in 1949, she moved to North Hartland where she started a family. She was active in community affairs. She loved sports, including gymnastics. In the summer time, she bicycled, played tennis, swam and sailed. In the winter, she enjoyed ice-skating and most especially cross country skiing.
She was a charter member of the Friends of Hopkins Center attending music, dance and ballet performances there.
She worked at Brookside Nursing Home as a certified nurses aide from 1972 to 1984 where she was a dedicated employee who was respected fro her professional demeanor and appreciated for her personable care of her patients. In 1987, she returned as a food service aide finally retiring in 1994.
She will be remembered as a kind hearted, thoughtful, generous, compassionate and caring woman. She remembered her friends on their birthdays and holidays. And she made birthdays and holidays special for her children and her husband. Over the years she gave to many charities.
She is survived by her children, John, James, and Jane, and one grandchild, Adam, who are grateful for her devotion, good will and loving kindnesses. She leaves them with a legacy of hope. She is also survived by her half brother and half sister in Germany and by family and friends in France, Germany, the Netherlands and Norway.
She was predeceased by her husband in 2000.
May her memory be a blessing to those who knew her.

    It’s hard to believe a year has passed since you left us. I remember Helga as a kind and generous lady, who cared about her appearance and that of her home. Enjoyed many lunches with her and girl-talk. She is missed.
