HARTLAND – A pregnant young mother and her two-year-old son both emerged unharmed from a freak collision with a black bear early Sunday evening on Interstate 91 in Hartland.
The Hartland Volunteer Fire Department and a Windsor Ambulance crew responded to the northbound lane of the interstate just after 7 p.m. and found the car a short distance before Exit 9 with moderate damaged to the front end and a dead black bear on the pavement.
“She said it came from the river side across the road and it just ran right out in front her,” recalled Hartland Assistant Fire Chief Scott Bowers, who added, ““We figured the bear was between 200 and 250 pounds.”
Bowers noted that for the most part, bears have called it a season and are hibernating by December but he said that apparently this year things are different because “the weather has been so screwy.”
“It hasn’t been that cold and we don’t have any snow on the ground so that’s what we are attributing it to,” Bowers said.
