PROSPER — A memorial service will be planned in Woodstock in the spring at the convenience of the family for Elsie Lewis Johnston who passed away on December 20, 2011 in Lewiston, ID.
She was born to Robert C. and Laura (Perkins) Lewis on August 18, 1917 in Bridgewater, VT.
Elsie attended the Prosper School and graduated from Woodstock High School in the class of 1936.
She married J. Jervis “Jib” Johnston on October 12, 1940. They moved from the Village to the farm in Prosper, VT in 1944.
Elsie was a very compassionate person to both people and animals. She also enjoyed spending time with her family in Idaho and Tennessee. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, handcrafts, and volunteering.
She was a member of the North Pomfret Congregational Church where she received a plaque and cane as being the oldest member of the church. She volunteered on many of the church committees and loved picking blueberries and strawberries for various suppers. She was a member of the Prosper Homemakers Club and for many years made the biscuits for the famous Prosper Chicken Pie Supper. She also was a member of the Prosper Community Club. She loved working on blood mobiles and driving other people shopping and to appointments. She was also a member of the VT Sugarmakers Association and enjoyed sugaring every spring.
Elsie was employed by the White Cupboard Inn in Woodstock, GW Plastics in Bethel, The Woodstock Pharmacy, and the P&C store in Woodstock for many years.
Survivors include two sons, Harold and Patricia Johnston of Chucky, TN and Neil and Jean Johnston of Lewiston, ID; one brother, John and Patricia Lewis of Quechee, VT; two sisters, Harriet Maynes of Windsor, VT and Margaret Abbot of Orlando, FL; one sister-in-law, Ruth Lewis of Woodstock, VT; seven grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; as well as a very special “son” Russ and Bev Audsley of Taftsville, VT.
She was prededeased by her husband, Jib; one brother, Rod; two grandsons, and one great grandson.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Prosper Community Club, c/o Martha Leonard, PO Box 54, Woodstock, VT 05091.
