HARTLAND — There will be no formal services for Alice E. Jersey, 102, a longtime resident of Hartland, who passed away Thursday, February 2, 2012 at the Cedar Hill Healthcare Center in Windsor. A private celebration of her life will be held at the convenience of her family.
She was born May 14, 1909 in Stratford, CT., the daughter of John W. and Wilhimina (Sichelstiel) Euerle.
She received her schooling in Stratford and graduated from Stratford High School in 1927 and later attended teachers college. She began her teaching career at Nicholas Grade School in Stratford.
Alice married John A. Jersey in 1949. They moved to Hartland, VT in 1953, where they owned and operated a dairy farm for many years.
Mrs. Jersey taught school at the State Street School in Windsor for several years until her retirement in 1980. She was a longtime member of the Hartland Nature Club and the Vermont Teachers Association. She attended the First Congregational Church in Hartland.
She was fond of the outdoors, and enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening. She was an avid writer and reader, enjoyed painting in watercolors, and was a champion Scrabble player.
Survivors include one stepson, John E. Jersey of Hartland, VT, two special neighbors and friends, Wolfgang Kannler and Linda Schneider, both of Hartland, many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, one great great niece and two great great nephews.
Mr. Jersey passed away on October 22, 2007. She was also predeceased by three brothers; and three sisters.
