This morning a group of six met inside the shuttered Barnard General Store to sign papers giving the non-profit Barnard Community Trust an option to purchase the store by the end of the year.
Along with store owner William Twigg-Smith and Paul Bruhn, Executive Director of the Preservation Trust of Vermont, the group agreed on a six-month option to purchase for $20,000, in a deal brokered by John Snyder of Snyder Bassette Real Estate Group. The agreed sale price is $500,000, and Trust member Tom Wright said that the goal is to raise $650,000. In the coming six months, the community may operate the store however they like.
Bruhn said, “The community can be assured that this will be a general store for a very long time.”
Trust member Tom Platner thanked owner Bill Twigg-Smith for keeping the store afloat for so long.
A community clean-up will take place at the store tomorrow at 10 a.m.
