QUECHEE – A 20-year-old who was believed to be intoxicated got out of a friend’s car following an argument and began jumping in-and-out of traffic on Route 4, causing him to be struck and killed by a car late Friday evening near the Fat Hat Factory.
Joshua Rice of Hartford was pronounced dead at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center shortly after he was transported there by a Hartford Ambulance crew.
Hartford Police said that Rice had been riding in a small car driven by Eric Canales, 26, of Quechee when a quarrel broke out between the two men and Rice abruptly got out of the vehicle a short distance west of the intersection between Route 4 and Quechee Main Street.
Police dispatchers received an initial report at 10:21 p.m. that someone was jumping in front of traffic there, and then moments later the switchboard began to light up with numerous 911 calls reporting the man had been struck and severely injured. Several Hartford cruisers and Vermont State Police troopers responded to the scene and shut down that section of Route 4 for nearly an hour while rescue efforts and then the accident reconstruction were underway.
Hartford Police said Canales was arrested at the scene for driving despite a suspended license and his vehicle was towed off the highway.
The driver of the car that struck Rice, Brenda Shurtleff, 54, of Nashua, New Hampshire, was not injured and police said that their investigation into the accident is on-going.

When I got to work this morning, I could see something serious was going on with Brenda. My heart breaks for her and the family & friends of this young man.
    This should not have happened.

This is tragic. Josh was a warm, friendly, outgoing young man with an infectious smile. He will be missed.
