Nelson Lee, a longtime community leader and former chair of the Bridgewater Selectboard, passed away early Thursday morning. He was 80. Lee was on the Selectboard for 26 years — a chair for most of those years. He resigned from his position in July because of health reasons.
“I knew I couldn’t do the job to the best of my abilities and I didn’t want to give it up,” said Lee after the meeting back in July. “But doing the job right was more important than sticking on.” An aviation buff, Lee — along with two others — formed Air New England, a commuter airline based in Hyannis, Mass. in 1970. Over the years Lee served as Bridgewater’s representative to the Greater Upper Valley Solid Waste District, the Two Rivers-Ottauquechee Planning Commission, the Chateauguay-No Town Conservation program and the town’s transportation advisory committee. Lee was known as a humble man who was committed to his town. In an interview with the Standard a month ago, he reflected on his time in public service.
“It’s been a privilege to serve my little town…I’ve had a lot of privileges in my life.”

My family and I were shocked to hear of Nelson’s death, he was a good friend and neighbour of ours for many years. On our yearly visits to Vermont one of our first stops was to Nelson’s farm. Our condolences go to Lynn and his family, he is a great loss to the area.

I have known Nelson for many years… I remember meeting with him and few others on the steps of the Bridgewater Grange to reform the Republican Town Committee… He has always been a pleasure to work with and has always, over the years, been a help to me personally. I especially appreciated his wise, thoughtful counsel. When Irene hit our little town of Bridgewater he was there and I know it broke his heart to see how this disaster ravaged Bridgewater. Ii cannot image him not being here with us on Earth. May his Soul rest in peace in the loving arms of God, protected by the
Angels… Fran Milo

I was sorry to hear of the passing of one of Bridgewater’s most dedicated citizens, Nelson Lee. Nelson was a good man and good friend. He cared a great deal for the town of Bridgewater and it’s citizens. He served the town well for many, many years and always tried to do what was best. He will be greatly missed, especially by me. Nelson did many kind things for me when I left the Town Clerk’s position. I was really pleased to see he was honored by the Town at their festivities at the end of August. He was certainly deserving of this honor. My condolences go out to Lynn and the rest of his family.

Nelson was a great, wonderful man. He will be greatly missed by those of us who have worked with him for 20+ years. He loved Bridgewater and cared deeply for our town and the people who live here. May he rest in peace.
