SOUTH WOODSTOCK — A memorial service for James H. Christy, 87, who died at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, N.H. on Oct. 8 after a long illness, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. at the Unitarian-Universalist Chapel in Woodstock.
Jim was born Feb. 19, 1925 in Hollidaysburg, Penn., son of Arthur and Jean (McMillian) Christy.
He graduated from Hollidaysburg, Penn. high school in 1942. After high school Jim joined the US Marine Corp. in the 4th Marine division. Being injured in the war, he returned home to then marry Virginia Walton in 1947.
Jim first worked for the state of Pennsylvania Highway Department as a draftsman and then for J. Bishop and Co as a platinum worker. In 1969, the Christys moved to South Woodstock, where he started his own landscaping business.
He was a founding board member of the Mertens House and Mellishwood, both of Woodstock. He was chairman of the board for the Unitarian Universalist Church in Woodstock and the Green Mountain Perkins Academy in South Woodstock. Jim loved his gardening.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Virginia of South Woodstock; two daughters, Dulany Bennet, South Woodstock and Katherine Christy, Portland, Oregon and one grandson, Thomas Bennett, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Jim was predeceased by one son Joseph; and two brothers Robert and Phillip.
