WINDSOR — A spring memorial is being planned for Eugene Holzwarth (Gene) of Windsor, who died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Dec. 18 after a long, courageous battle with a rare form of dementia. There will be no calling hours.

Gene was born in Teaneck, N.J. on Dec. 23, 1943, a son of Mary Veronica (Frazer) and Francis Carl Holzwarth and grew up in Hackensack, N.J.

As a teenager, Gene enjoyed traveling to New Hampshire in the summer and sailing his small sailboat around Canobie Lake. He loved making miniatures of boats and trains. His interest in antique cars started when he was 16 and he purchased his 1928 model A Ford with a rumble seat. He was a starting player for the Hackensack football team and ran track and field.

After graduating from Hackensack High School he headed to Lyndon State College in his Model A. There he met his future wife Jamie. After graduation from college, he taught in Hancock for two years before moving to Windsor. He then continued his teaching career at Hartland Elementary, where he was known as Mr. H. He retired from Hartland in 2005 after 36 years of teaching coaching, and advising students. He loved those Hartland students and thought they were the best.

He continued to have many interests outside of school: restoring the 1840s family home, antique cars and wooden works clocks. He and Joanie traveled to Australia in 1988 for the Castrol World Rally, to London in 1996 for the London to Brighton Run, and again to Tasmania in 2004 for a tour around “that land down under, down under.”

Survivors include his wife Joanie (Pond), a son Tim and grandson Christopher and wife Elizabeth and grandchildren, Madison and Aaron of Windsor; a daughter, Tamara and her husband Ruben and grandchildren, Katherine, Augusta, and Asia of Cataumet, Mass.; and his sister Marie and her husband, Carl Kenny Roberts and nephew Carl Roberts of Elmwood Park, N.J. He was very proud of his family and their many accomplishments.

In lieu of flowers, please give to your favorite charity.
