Representative Peter Welch Friday called for passage of a bill that he said would even the playing field between Internet vendors and brick-and-mortar businesses when it comes to sales tax. Currently, Welch said, Vermont’s Main Street businesses are at a disadvantage as consumers can go to the Internet to buy many of the products in the stores, without having to pay sales tax.
Passage of the bill would mean that consumers are no longer responsible for reporting sales tax owed for online purchases on their tax return.
