STOCKBRIDGE — Services for Shirley Blackmer Eldredge, 81, who died March 18, will be Saturday March 30 at 1 p.m. at the Stockbridge Meeting House on the common. Calling hours will be Friday, March 29 from 6-8 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home, Randolph. Burial will be June 8 at 10 a.m. at the Maplewood Cemetery on Stockbridge Common.
Shirley was born in Stockbridge on June 9, 1931, daughter of Gaius and Winona (Lamb) Blackmer. She was born in the old Durkee Farm (now known as Wildberry Bed and Breakfast) less than a mile from where she lived with her family for 57 years.
She attended schools on the Stockbridge Common and graduated from Whitcomb High School in 1949.
On July 18, 1950 she married Glenn A. Eldredge and together they lived in Stockbridge until she no longer could be cared for at home and became a resident at Menig Extended Care Unit in Randolph in December 2008.
Shirley’s most joy was being a homemaker. She worked outside of the home for a short time at GW Plastics but her love of babies called her back home to start her own daycare where she cared for several area infants until they were old enough to go to school. Her fee was $1 per hour, which included lunch!
Shirley and Glenn loved to dance and were always looking for a good time. They were well known at many of the dance halls in the area such as Dreamland at Tunbridge Fair, the Silver Dome and Fish and Game Club in Randolph and the Canadian Club in Barre as well as Elks clubs and town halls in the area. Shirley was also an avid Red Socks and Celtics fan. She and Glenn traveled to Florida for 10 winters with Anna and Alfred Hill. While watching these games Anna taught her to knit and as a result each child and grandchild has an afghan.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Glenn of Stockbridge: a brother, G. Harvey Blackmer, also of Stockbridge; two children and their spouses, Paul and Charlene Eldredge of Quechee and Charlene and Steve Anderson of Barre; four grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren: Tracey Soboleski and her children Michael, Zachary and Bryce of Hartford: Paul Eldredge II and his children, Tyler and Cameron of Quechee: Colby and Brittany Eldredge and their children Lola and Hunter of Baltimore Md.: Travis Robinson and Ashley Adams of Plainfield, N.H.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents; a sister-in-law Mona Blackmer; and cousin Robert Blackmer.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Menig Extended Care Facility, PO Box 2000, Randolph, VT.
