QUECHEE — A 38-year-old Hartford man and a 63-year-old Woodstock woman were killed and two passengers were hurt Thursday morning in a head-on collision that occurred on a wooded, winding stretch of Route 4 between Hathaway Road and the Fat Hat Factory.

Corey Daniels, 38, of Hartford and Nina Dimick of Woodstock died following the accident which took place at about 9:30 a.m.

Hartford Fire Chief Steve Locke said it appeared to have been a chain-reaction collision that began when the car driven by Dimick crossed the center line and struck the rear end of a small utility trailer that was being towed behind another vehicle driven by 71-year-old Roger Cann of Pennsylvania. Dimick then swerved further into the westbound lane where she hit an oncoming car, driven by Daniels.

Both drivers had to be extricated from their cars by Hartford firefighters using hydraulic rescue tools.

Daniels was pronounced dead at the scene, but the injuries to the two passengers — both teenagers — in his car were not life-threatening although both of his passengers were taken to the hospital in separate Hartford ambulances for treatment of injuries that were described as “minor” in one case, and “serious” in the other.

The DHART medical helicopter landed at the scene and the crew opted to take Dimick to the hospital in a Lebanon Ambulance that had also been called in. She was pronounced dead after arriving at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

A Vermont State Police accident reconstruction team responded to help Hartford Police with the crash investigation. Route 4 was expected to be closed into the early afternoon on Thursday as scene measurements and cleanup continued.

the survivors said they never hit a trailer or swerved out of their lane. unfortunately it was Nina that struck our family . but it is just that a horrible accident. The cars hit so hard they were in confusing positions….

This wrong. Nina was driving tbe opposite dirextion specified here. I would know, she was on her way home.
