Claire Hale (Farmer) Farnum, 94, died at her home in Chester on April 23. She was born on May 13, 1918 in Windsor to Merrill King Farmer and Martha Ada (Hale) Farmer. She lived in Windsor until she was 13 when her family moved to Chester Depot. She graduated from Chester High School in 1935. She married C. Stanley Farnum on Jan. 10, 1940.
Claire was an active member of the Congregational Church serving as teacher, organist, choir director for junior and senior choirs and member of the Women’s Fellowship. She also conducted community cantatas and taught piano for many years. She will be remembered for her love of music, her devotion to family and her service to her church. She was also an avid reader and knitter making many items for family and those in need.
Survivors include her brother, Russell J. Farmer of Springfield and three daughters: Sara Spoor and her husband, Kenneth of Springfield; Charlotte Gomo of North Pomfret; and Deborah Armstrong and her husband, Rev David Armstrong of Chester. Also five grandchildren: Kathrine Gosselin of Springfield; Karen Esterline of Wausau, Wisc.; Nancy Gunter of Olympia, Wa.; Gregory Gomo of Chester and Aaron Gomo of Plainfield, N.H. Claire had 10 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years in 2006, two sisters, Carol Reid and Marilyn McCoy, a great granddaughter and two great granddaughters.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at the Chester Congregational Church on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Chester Congregational Church, Box 462, Chester, VT 05143 OR The Andover Community Church, 2625 Simonsville Road, Andover, VT 05143.
