The chapel at the Joseph Smith Birthplace Memorial site near Sharon was damaged when an unoccupied vehicle rolled into the rear of the building Thursday night, according to state police.
The chapel sustained significant exterior damage after a 1997 Nissan Pathfinder, owned by Woodstock resident Emily Burkholder, slid down an embankment near the chapel around 7 p.m. Thursday. Police found that the vehicle’s emergency brake failed, causing the accident. There were no injuries.
The vehicle didn’t go through the outside wall, but the area where it struck the building buckled, according to police. No estimate of damage was given.
The site memorializes Smith, the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Admission to the visitor’s center and tours of the memorial site are free, according to its website.
