Staff Report

A van traveling on Route 4 caught fire Thursday afternoon near the Chef’s Garden farm stand in Bridgewater Corners.

The driver of the van, John Shattuck of Lake George, N.Y., wasn’t injured in the fire, which fully engulfed his Plymouth Voyager, and had to be put out by the Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department. Traffic was down to one lane on Route 4 for more than an hour at the site of the fire.

Shattuck, 75, was driving his vehicle west on Route 4 when he noticed his late-’90s model Voyager was running sluggish. He heard a few pops — what he thought was the battery and a few .22-caliber shotgun shells in his glove compartment. The hood started to smoke and he got out of the van just in time to see flames coming from the hood.

“I grabbed my wallet and my keys and got the hell out of there,” said Shattuck.

Shattuck said he bought the van three years ago and never had any problems before Thursday.

It took the fire department less than 30 minutes to extinguish the flames, but the front of the van was almost completely charred.
