CONTOOCOOK, N.H. — Funeral services were held at the Contoocook United Methodist
Church on July 1 for Woodbury L. Roberts, 92, who passed away peacefully at Concord Hospital
on June 26.
Woodbury, or Woody to his many friends and family members, was born in Barnard, son of George and Mary Roberts on July 2, 1920.
During his early years he lived in Barnard and helped to manage the family farm while attending South Royalton High School where he graduated in 1938. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 during WWII and was a veteran of the South Pacific Theater.
Upon discharge from the Army, Woody married Virginia G. Piper on June 30, 1946 and together they moved to Concord, NH.. where he was a partner in Concord Builders. Woody was a respected homebuilder in the Greater Concord/Hopkinton area. After building nearly 40 houses in the 1960′s and 1970′s, Woody spent the next 35 years in his beloved woodshop, repairing, restoring and refinishing furniture.
At an early age, Woody nurtured his gift for playing the piano; He “never had a lesson” and played by ear. He also taught himself to play the accordion. These talents enabled him to entertain his many fans for over 70 years at barn dances, concerts on the Green, nursing home performances and impromptu gatherings at his home. Woody had a love of being with his friends and family especially when they were gathered around his piano for a sing-a-long. Woody’s band was proud to receive the 2012 Governor’s Volunteer Recognition Award in thanks for providing over 35 years of entertainment at local nursing homes.
Woody and his wife, Virginia, fostered a home where all were welcome and made to feel special. They always found time to listen to each visitor and enjoy their time together. Woody’s community minded spirit lead him to involvement in numerous volunteer projects in the Contoocook/Hopkinton area. His kind and compassionate nature, quick wit and love for his community will live on with his family, band members and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Virginia Grace Piper Roberts, and sister Ella Lamontange of Exeter, N.H.; two sons and their families; David L. Roberts and his son and daughter-in-law Shane Daniels Roberts and wife Sabrina, Woodbury C. Roberts and his wife Trish and their children, Adam and Anne Roberts. Also very dear to Woody was his nephew, Fred B. Roberts and his wife Dale and Fred’s children Darren and Carlton Roberts and their loving families. Woody is the uncle to many nieces and nephews. Woody will be greatly missed by his many fellow musicians, friends and loving family.
Woody was predeceased by three brothers, Charles Roberts, George Roberts and Henry Roberts; and two sisters, Clive Roberts and Esther Roberts.
