There will be a private, family only celebration of life for Harmony Renee Hammond, at which time she will be buried alongside her mother and stepfather at Riverside Cemetery in Woodstock. Harmony died July 28 in Rochester, N.Y., after an extended fight against dementia.
Mother extraordinaire of Harmony L. Hammond of Galisteo, N.M., Terry Kelly of Rochester, N.Y., Rand Hammond of Bend, Or., Nikki Hayes of Burlington, and Scott Hammond. Our Mom was a feisty, independent woman who, after taking care of her mother, was determined to not burden her children with her own health care issues.
Although she wished to stay with her friends in Norwich, we moved Mom first to Burlington, and then to Rochester, N.Y., where we could help with her medical needs and ensure her as much worry free independence as possible. Mom loved her five children, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, and was very proud of each and every one of them.
Harmony was born in Chicago, Ill. on April 4, 1922, and lived in the Chicago area until moving to New England in 1969. Having lived in Woodstock and Norwich she had many treasured friends in the Upper Valley, and amazed everyone with her energy and diverse interests.
Harmony was a member of The Congregational Church Bell Ringers group and The Foggy Mountain Cloggers, volunteered at the Woodstock Historical Society, worked at the Woodstock Chamber of Commerce Information Booth, and in 1994, was crowned Ms. Senior Vermont. She threw the javelin and discus in the Vermont Senior Games, won several state titles for her age group, and represented Vermont in the National Senior Olympics in 1994, 1997, and 1999. Her enthusiasm will be missed by family, friends, and members of the community.
Remember Harmony with a smile, and a song, as she loved to dance and sing.
