BETHEL — Funeral services for Joseph P. DeFreitas, 72, who died Sept. 14 at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph, will be held Thursday, Sept. 19 at 12 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home with Pastor Thomas Harty officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Randolph Center.
He was born Aug. 16, 1941 in Dorchester, Mass., the son of John T. and Mary (Doran) DeFreitas.
Joseph was raised in Dorchester and Quincy, Mass. He graduated from Norfolk County Agricultural School, Walpole, Mass., in 1959.
Following his education he worked as a truck mechanic for a few years.
He was married to Carol Carabbio on Feb. 1, 1964. He then served in the U.S. Army. He served in Vietnam where he received several medals including the Bronze Star. After his discharge he returned home and worked as a fleet manager for the trucking industry in Boston, Mass. for many years.
The DeFreitas’ moved to Bethel in 1998 where “Joe” continued working, selling and repairing commercial pressure washers for Mobile Sales and Service until his retirement in 2006.
He had served on the Bethel Selectboard for several terms and was a member of the Bethel Area Rotary. He enjoyed collecting pocket watches, camping, fishing and working around his yard.
He is survived by his wife Carol DeFreitas of Bethel, a son Dana DeFreitas of Stockbridge, his sister Mary Shanahan of Quincy, Mass., and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, and two brothers John and Paul DeFreitas.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Joseph’s name may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 or any other veterans help organization.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home, Randolph.
