SEATTLE, Wash — A memorial service and burial will be held in New London in mid-May for Margaret (Peg) Kendal Thornton, 99, who passed away peacefully Jan. 14 at the Kline Galland Home in Seattle where she had moved recently from New Hampshire to be near family.
She lived her 99 years to the fullest as wife to Fletcher Thornton (deceased 2008 after 71 years of marriage), and mother to Anne Bridges, Wenatchee, Wash. (formerly of Woodstock), Susan Starbuck, Seattle, and Barbara Thornton (deceased 1998). Peg’s five grandchildren are Jerry Bridges (wife Sara and daughter Maya), Cyndi Bridges (partner Drew Smith), and Emily, Elinor, and Madeleine Frey. Peg was predeceased by brothers John and Robert Kendal.
She was born on Oct. 10 in Summit, N.J., daughter of Clifford and Margaret Kendal.
Peg graduated from Kent Place School in Summit, and Smith College where she earned a BA in Art and Literature. Friends, family, and clients commissioned hundreds of her watercolor paintings and pen and ink drawings, mostly of New England landscapes. She was invited to show her work in both private and group shows all over New England.
Peg wrote diaries, biographies, poems, philosophical pieces, and spent 50 years writing a book titled One Decade At A Time that was published when she was 98. In addition to her life of creativity, Peg contributed generously to the communities of Summit, N.J., Dorset, and New London, N.H.
As a young married couple Peg and Fletch lived in St. Louis, Cincinnati, Boston area (where they started their family), and upstate New York before returning to Summit where they both grew up. Always fond of Vermont, Peg inspired her family to spend memorable ski and summer vacations there. When Fletch retired they spent summers in Vermont and winters in New London. In later years they resided at Riverwoods in Exeter, N.H. After Fletch’s death Peg moved back to New London to Woodcrest Village.
