WOODSTOCK – Though not yet an Olympic event, competitive snow sculpting is practiced all over the world, has rules and regulations, inspires greatness, and most importantly thrills the crowd. This February the Woodstock Green will once again become the blank slate upon which competitive snow artisans from across New England create their masterpieces. The 2nd Annual Vermont Flurry is presented by Pentangle Arts and Artistree, and takes place February 14 – 16.

In the days leading up to the event volunteers from the community will gather on the Green to stomp snow into giant blocks, each block weighing close to 5760 pounds (or 2 ½ tons!). Teams of no more than three will begin sculpting on Friday, February 14, with each team having approximately 60 hours to finish their sculpture. In a testament to creativity, engineering, and strength the use of power tools, colorants and weight bearing armatures is not allowed. The competitors can only use hand tools, imagination and ingenuity.

Not only is the event snow dependent, but also the temperature during the competition weekend influences sculpture results. A sunny and warm day may increase the danger of sculptures collapsing, while a sunny and cold day may soften the details within the design. Perfect weather for snow sculpting is a cloudy, below freezing, windless day — the latter element mostly for the artist’s comfort.

No competition is complete without judges and prizes. The public will vote on the top three winners, and prizes will be awarded. THE VERMONT FLURRY transforms the Woodstock Village Green into a celebration of winter and the visual arts. Cheer on professional snow sculpting teams as they compete to create large, stunning sculptures, and be amazed as these works of art come to life over a three-day period. An unforgettable Village centerpiece!

Pentangle and Artistree would like to thank all the volunteers and local businesses that have stepped forward to provide lodging and to donate food to the visiting artists. This event would not be possible without the generous support of Williamson Sotheby Group.
