QUECHEE — A celebration of life will be held at a later date for James J. von Gal, 73, who died March 21 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
He was born March 12, 1941 in Washington, Conn. son of Irving J. and Margaret M. (Viens) von Gal.
Jim was educated in Washington schools through the 8th grade and attended The Gunnery School for his secondary education, graduating in 1959. Jim then attended Dartmouth College, graduating in 1963 with a degree in Economics.
He began his career in the Life Insurance industry in 1963 at Aetna Life and Casualty in Hartford, Conn. Jim left Aetna in 1965 and spent 2 years with Van Norman Machine Company of Springfield, Mass., as a sales representative, first in Arizona and then Indiana.
A member of the US Army Reserve, Jim was ordered to active duty in 1968 and spent two years in Heidelberg, Germany serving at Headquarters, U.S. Army Europe. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant before leaving the service in 1969.
In 1969 he returned to the Life Insurance industry with Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company in Hartford. He spent the next 20 years with that company, holding various positions in Customer Service, Information Systems and marketing, before retiring in 1989.
In 1976 Jim married Eileen McCoy, his lifetime partner and love whom he had met at work. Together they raised two children, son Scott and daughter Piper.
In 1989, Jim and Eileen moved to Quechee. While Eileen returned to the Insurance Industry full-time at National Life Insurance Company in Montpelier, Jim spent the rest of his career in various endeavors, primarily involving Life Insurance. He spent five years with National Life Insurance and several years as a consultant to various insurance companies, particularly assisting them in preparing their information systems for Year 2000 processing.
Jim served the Quechee Club in several capacities during the 1990s, including two years as President and a time as General Manager. After his retirement from work in 2001, Jim spent eight years as a Lister for the Town of Hartford.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen; one son Scott and his wife Tina of Bridgewater; one daughter Piper and her husband Britt Hollis of Duxbury, Mass.; as well as grandsons, Ty and Tucker Hollis.
The Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction assisted with arrangements.
