BARNARD — A celebration of Life was held on June 22 for Margot Harcher, who passed away on June 17 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire from complications due to Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
She was born February 22, 1943 in Bayonne, New Jersey to Margaret and George Harcher.
Margot graduated from Westwood High School in Westwood, New Jersey. She attended Lasell College in Boston and then studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
She lived in Manhattan, where she worked as a graphic artist in the advertising industry and Family Circle Magazine. She attended PACE University, where she received an Associate’s degree in Applied Science in 1974, and went on to work as a registered nurse.
As a young woman, Margot enjoyed skiing, hiking and traveling across Europe. She settled in Vermont in her thirties, where she met Arnold Powell, to whom she was married for 16 years. Her only son, Christopher J Powell, was born on Oct. 12, 1979.
In recent years, Margot volunteered as the telephone link for Barnard Helping Hands, a Barnard-based philanthropic group. She gave abundantly and was always appreciative of the support she received from her large group of friends.
Margot was fond of her furry friends and enjoyed the company of many dogs and cats throughout her life. She was a fiercely independent and optimistic woman and enjoyed developing innovative tools for dealing with the challenges of life with MS. She lived with MS with incredible grace and humor.
A socially active woman, Margot enjoyed sharing dinner and Scrabble with friends at her kitchen table over a glass of red wine. Her time alone was often spent hooking rugs, tending the many plants she kept on her windowsill and deck, and watching the birds play on the tray feeder outside her kitchen window.
Margot’s most recent joy was the birth of her grandson Gaige Elliot Powell, born to her son Christopher and Tayra (Fedorka) who now live in Hughesville, Pennsylvania.
She leaves her son, Chris Powell; grandson, Gaige Powell; daughter-in-law, Tayra Fedorka; her brother, George Harcher and his wife, Pat Harcher, of Westwood, New Jersey; her brother Daniel Harcher of Charleston South Carolina; and her step children, Shon of Bridgewater and Stacy Powell of Barre.
Margot was predeceased by her parents, Margaret and George Harcher; and her sister-in-law, Dottie Harcher (wife of Daniel Harcher).
Those wishing to give gifts in Margot’s memory are encouraged to donate to the organizations she supported in life—The Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society (www.lucymac.org) and Barnard Helping Hands (www.barnardhelpinghands.org).
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hanover, N.H.
