HARLTLAND — Services were held June 8 at the Quechee Community Church for Roland E. McKinney, Sr., who died June 1, surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with lung cancer. Burial will take place at 1:30 p.m., June 16 at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center, Vermont
Born in Island Pond, he was the seventh of 12 children to the late Earl and Dorothy (Boutin) McKinney. Mr. McKinney was raised and educated in Vermont, and after high school, he served in active duty in the United States Navy from 1968 until 1971 and in the Naval Reserves until 1973. After his discharge from the Navy, he was employed by Leonard J. Ballou Distributing Company (Wise Potato Chips) until 1985 when he started working for Nissen Baking Company until his retirement in 2010.
Mr. McKinney and his wife, Catherine, celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on May 26th.
Mr. McKinney loved to read the newspaper and watch Fox News and was always ready to express his views on world events. He loved to hunt, fish and spend time with family, especially his grandchildren. He loved to explore the back roads of Vermont with his brother-in-law and partner in crime, Jerry Lyman, after enjoying lunch at Crossroads Café. He was a lifetime member of Hartford BPOE #1541.
Mr. McKinney is survived by his wife, Catherine; his daughter, Angela Johnson, of Henrico, Virginia.; his sons, John McKinney, Sr. of White River Jct., Joseph McKinney, of Corinth and Roland McKinney, Jr., of Mansfield, Ohio; his stepdaughter, Karen Downing of Tunbridge; his stepson, Jeffrey Downing of Hartland; 12 grandchildren, Travis Johnson, Kaitlyn Johnson, Ryan Johnson, John McKinney, Jr., Nicholas McKinney, Fonda McKinney, Mairia McKinney, Jordan McKinney, Hunter McKinney, Amanda Howe, Emily Howe, and Julie Downing; four great-grandchildren, Brayden Danso-Danquah, Bradley Johnson, Vannah McKinney, and Jozzlyan McKinney; two brothers, Larry McKinney and Bruce McKinney, Sr., both of White River Jct.; five sisters, Patricia Belisle of Hartland, Charlotte Lyman, of White River Jct., Priscilla Burgess, of Enfield, New Hamphisre, Bonnie Vitagliano, of White River Jct., and Alice Whitney of Quechee, as well many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father, Earl McKinney, Sr., his mother, Dorothy McKinney; four brothers, Thomas McKinney, Earl McKinney, Jr., William McKinney and Richard McKinney; and a granddaughter, Whitney Howe.
