BRAINTREE — Private graveside services, with military honors, will be held at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery, in Randolph Center, at a later date for Richard C. “Dick” Swanson, 85, who died July 5 at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph. There are no calling hours.
He was born April 6, 1929 in Worcester, Massachusetts, son of Nels and Alna (Gay) Swanson.
Dick attended Bridgewater schools and graduated from Woodstock High School in 1948. After his schooling he worked as a ski instructor at Stowe. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Following his honorable discharge from the service he was married to Nancy Ambrose April 11, 1953 in Sherburne.
Dick worked for Central Vermont Public Service for 37 years, starting as a meter reader and retiring as a superintendent.
The Swansons moved to Randolph in 1973. They spent 23 years wintering in New Mexico. They moved to Braintree in 2011. Dick enjoyed skiing, hiking, golfing, gardening and spending time with family. His memberships included Montague Golf Club in Randolph and Rio Members Golf Course in New Mexico.
He is survived by his wife Nancy Swanson of Braintree; a daughter Zo Hardy and husband Matthew of Braintree; two sons; Arni Swanson and wife Margaret of Tyngsboro, Massachusetts and Lars Swanson and partner Stacey Renner of Braintree; a brother Robert Swanson of Springfield; five grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
