The cross country teams opened their season in fine fashion Tuesday, sweeping both the boys and girls team titles. It was the first of three meets at Thetford this season, but quite likely the only one to be held on a very warm and sticky day. The runners will return on Oct. 4 for the annual Woods Trail Run and again on Oct. 25 for the state championships.
The Woodstock depth was evident, propelling the Wasps to the twin victories on the day. The girls finished with 21 points, well ahead of Thetford (57) and Brattleboro (58). The boys team’s 35 points were followed by Thetford (73) and Bellow Falls (76) in the standings.
Woodstock’s boys cross country team nipped Harwood, while the girls came in fourth place in the Essex Invitational meet on Saturday. Twenty teams competed in the large meet, with about half of them in Woodstock’s Division II category.
The Woodstock cross country girls claimed third place while the boys were sixth at the Burlington Invitational last weekend. The boys, however, were missing three of the top seven runners, so a lower finish was not unexpected.
