Staff Report
Fundraising continues for a new playground at Woodstock Elementary School and the project, called “Hands on the Land: Learning Landscape Project,” is the impetus for a dinner Saturday, April 6 at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Mangowood Restaurant in West Woodstock.

Woodstock Elementary School principal Karen White said that the school has raised $206,000 to date and will need to raise another $100,000. The group has received three grants; one for $10,000 grant from the Woodstock Learning Trust and Vermont Community Foundation and Whole Kids, and is waiting to hear back from several groups they’ve applied for grants with.

In November of last year, WES together with architect Jack Rossi developed a master plan for the three acres on which the school resides. The plans include grassy areas, a treehouse and play structures that White says will be safer and more accessible than the current structure, which she says limits the way children play.

Funds from Saturday’s dinner will go toward the first phase of the grounds project which deals with the play area in particular.

“This event is a great community building event,” White said of the dinner. “Faculty members from WES serve the meal, assist in the kitchen, and do the dishes. The food is absolutely delicious.”

The a cappella group Hyannis Sound is scheduled to perform at the dinner.

For more information about the dinner or for reservations, contact Leanne Chynoweth at (802) 457-3454 or at busman1@comcast.net.

…a lovable, lonely heart named Maureen Mulligan gives romance one last shot on a blind date with sweet, awkward Joseph Spinelli. They both know they’re perfect for each other, but will they be able to make it work?

Pentangle Presents… Live Irish Music.
Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with two legends of Irish music! Karan Casey and John Doyle first came to international prominence as founding members of the influential Irish band Solas. Now deep into their solo careers, the two – one of Irish music’s most glorious voices and one of its mightiest instrumentalists – have reunited. Karan Casey has received critical worldwide acclaim as one of Ireland’s greatest singers, including being twice voted Best Female Traditional/Folk artist by Irish Music Magazine. The AP calls Casey’s voice “…so beautiful, it’s almost impossible to avoid falling under her spell.” Guitarist John Doyle’s solo career has included a GRAMMY-nominated pairing with fiddler Liz Carroll; two solo albums, including one which The Irish Edition hailed as “a contender for Album of the Year.” Doyle has also become a highly sought-after accompanist and session player for the likes of Joan Baez, Eileen Ivers, Tim O’Brien, Linda Thompson, and Seamus Egan.

Valley News local news editor John Gregg will discuss his newspaper’s coverage at the Norman Williams Library as part of the Meet Your Local Media Forum on March 7 at 6 p.m.

By Virginia Dean
Standard Correspondent
Valley News local news editor John Gregg will discuss his newspaper’s coverage at the Norman Williams Library as part of the Meet Your Local Media Forum on March 7 at 6 p.m.
“I’m happy to do it because the Woodstock area is an important part of our readership,” said Gregg in a recent interview. “And I hope the public will understand more of what we do as a newspaper.”
The Valley News, Gregg added, is in an area where a daily newspaper plays an important role, or the most important role, in terms of everyday news for people.
“The Internet saturation hasn’t spread up here as in other parts of the country,” Gregg said. “We also have expanded our website, so people who want to get their news digitally can do so as well.”
In addition to his reporting and editing, Gregg writes a weekly political column called Primary Source that is considered salient and informational on both sides of the Connecticut River.
“It hopefully gives the kind of information that people would want to know beyond what they’re seeing on TV as well as the reasons why politicians are doing what they’re doing,” Gregg said. “It’s more context-based. One of the great appeals of working for the Valley News is covering both Vermont and New Hampshire which are so diametrically different in terms of politics.”
An English major at Williams College, Class of 1985, Gregg has worked for newspapers in Washington, D.C., and Boston, Mass., including Roll Call, (Washington), the Rutland Herald and United Press International.
“After graduating, I thought I wanted to get into the publishing field,” Gregg said. “So I returned to Washington, D.C., where I had grown up. Eventually, I got an internship working for a local magazine and then, Roll Call, a weekly paper.”
Gregg later became the chief speechwriter for former Massachusetts Governor William Weld (1991-97) who Gregg describes as a socially liberal and fiscally conservative ex-Republican Governor who early on supported gay and abortion rights.
“He had a lot working for him,” Gregg said. “Even as an Independent, I had a tremendous amount of respect for him. He opened my eyes about how politicians work the media that he did as well as anyone in Massachusetts at that time. It helped with the political agenda he had, and it was pretty fascinating to watch. Hopefully, it has made me a better reporter.”
Gregg joined the staff full time of the Valley News in 2003. He has participated in the Vermont Edition on PBS over the last four years discussing news around the Upper Valley.
“The forum shows that people in the Upper Valley have made some high quality choices in getting information from a variety of sources,” Gregg said.
He and his wife, Mary, live in Westminster, Vt., which is a 100-mile round trip commute to the paper’s headquarters in West Lebanon, N.H.
“It’s long, but the Valley News is a great place to work,” Gregg said. “It has a lot of engaged readers and that’s very meaningful to me.”
Event organizers Bob Hager, retired NBC correspondent, and John Mathews, retired newspaper reporter and editor, and NBC producer, will moderate the forum.

Twenty-seven year old Woodstock resident, Pete Michelinie, has joined an elite group of hikers by completing all of America’s three great trails: the Appalachian Trail (2008), the Pacific Crest Trail (2010), and the daunting Continental Divide Trail (2012)… 7,500 miles in all.

Taking a hiatus from his job as a furniture maker at Shackleton Thomas, Pete began his most recent challenge, the Continental Divide Trail on May 10th in Palomas, Mexico, ending at the Canadian border on Oct 5th. With only a compass and minimal equipment in his fifteen pound pack, he hiked 20-25 miles a day. Friends and family helped along the way by mailing “care packages” to small towns near the trail. While in town, he would visit the local library emailing all that he was alive and well and then off he’d go to have a beer or two. From the heat in New Mexico to snow in the northern Rockies, bear tracks on the trail, elk, wolf and mountain goat sightings, a bout of food poisoning, blisters galore, 4 pairs of shoes, and 7500 miles later… Pete has a lifetime of stories to tell.

In a multi-media presentation, Pete will discuss and take questions about what it’s like Hiking the “Triple Crown” on Wednesday, Feb 13 at 7:00 pm at Norman Williams Library, Woodstock
