Brownsville Church Wants To Help Oklahoma Town Rebuild

The Brownsville Community Church is holding a fundraiser Sunday, May 26 at 9 a.m. for the victims of last Monday’s deadly tornado in Oklahoma.

The church, located on Brownsville-Hartland Road, will serve coffee and muffins and take donations for those who lost their homes and possessions when a massive tornado struck the town of Moore, just south of Oklahoma City.

Laurie Hall, one of the organizers of the fundraiser, said the tragedy in Oklahoma touched the church’s congregation.

“We went through the flood and people helped us,” Hall said. “We just thought, let’s give them our support and help them rebuild.”

Hall is working on getting some entertainment for the gathering.

Donations will go to the United MEthodist Committee on Relief special fund for the disaster.

Memorial Day Parade Canceled; Ceremony Monday

The Memorial Day Parade has been canceled due to weather — though there will be a ceremony Monday.

A ceremony to honor veterans will be held at the Legion, Monday at 9 a.m.

Change The World Kids Fundraisers Friday, Saturday

Norma Sawyer Obituary

BRIDGEWATER — A memorial service was held on May 20 at the Bridgewater Congregational Church for Norma Sawyer, 84, who died May 16 from a motor vehicle accident on Route 4 in Woodstock.
Norma was born May 20, 1928, daughter of Cecil and Helen Howe Longe.
She was raised in Woodstock and Pomfret.
She married Edmund Sawyer on April 30, 1948. They lived the rest of their lives in Bridgewater.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Windsor Unit 25 in Windsor. She enjoyed the members of the post who made her feel at home.
She especially loved being with “her five wonderful children.” Sandra Brown and Lance Sawyer of Hartland, Deb Fish, Don Sawyer and Deanne Carvalho of Bridgewater; grandchildren, Melissa Walker, Mitchell and Stephen Tarleton, Louis and Holly Phelps, Elizabeth Fish, Chris and Mandy Mangan, Robin Sawyer, Noah and Summer Carvalho; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; and her special son-in-law Ed Brown. She is also survived by two sisters, Sue Esty and Lois Rice of Woodstock; one brother Paul Towne of Tucson, Ariz; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years; two brothers, Lee E. Towne, Jr. Charles Longe; and one sister Mary Longe Earle.
Norma basically loved life. She grew a large garden, mowed her lawns, fed the birds and bears, and her special chipmunk “Lucky.” She loved playing double king pede, kayaking, fishing, but her passion was dancing.
Those wishing may make memorial donations to the VFW, 97 South Main Street, White River Jct., VT 05001.
The Cabot Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

WUHSMS Music Director Jody Henderson brought together his hard working student jazz bands and professional local musicians for a delightful night of spirited music he dubbed “Jazz on the Town,” held at the Woodstock Town Hall last Sunday. Henderson continually exposes his students to professionals and provides opportunity for them to play and improvise with the pros, both local and visiting.

Sabrina Brown and Fred Haas, Jazz in Woodstock
Friday night the ArtisTree in Woodstock hosted a free Jazz Concert featuring Fred Haas and Sabrina Brown. Brown had approached Musical Director Mark van Gulden in March about performing a spring jazz concert, Friday night’s show was the result of these past few months of planning. The ArtisTree “Listening Room” was packed with local jazz enthusiasts.

Jerold Paglia Obituary

UNIONTOWN, Ohio —
A celebration of Life was held May 18 at Schermesser Funeral Home in Akron, Ohio for Jerold John Paglia, 67, who passed away from complications related to pancreatic cancer on May 5.
He was born on Aug. 16, 1945 in Hanover, N.H., the son of the late Elio A. Paglia and Dorothy (Hathorn) Paglia.
Jerold is survived by his wife Christine; daughter and son-in-law Amy and Sonny Matharu of California; granddaughter Makenna; in-laws Don and Ardis Rogers of Indiana; sister-in-law Sandy (Bob) Boyer of Nevada; brother Bruce (Alice) Paglia of Vermont; sister-in-law Evelyn Paglia of Vermont; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by two brothers James E and Richard A.
Jerold was a graduate of Woodstock Union High School in Woodstock in 1963 and graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1968. Jerold spent a 40-year career in accounting and financial positions with Goodrich Corp.
The family would like to thank the dedicated staff, Annie, Roger, Ed, Bill and Courtney of Summa Hospice and Michelle of Living Angels for their constant love and care.

Walter Hutchins Obituary

NORTH SALEM, NY — Walter overcame many personal obstacles and a Celebration of his life will take place with friends and family to be announced at a later date for Walter Hutchins, 56, who passed away at Westchester County Hospital on May 10 from complications, resulting from injuries sustained in a tragic bicycling accident, while riding with friends in North Salem, N.Y.
Walter was the second of four children and the proud father of three beautiful and amazing teenage daughters.
He was born in Berlin, N.H. on Feb. 22, 1957, son of William and Mary H. Hutchins.
He attended Eaglebrook School in Deerfield, Mass. and then graduated from Hanover High School in 1974. Walter continued his education at the University of Utah for a year. He worked on the Strang Ranch in Carbondale, Colo., and organized ski races in Aspen, Colo., for two years before continuing his education, in agriculture, at the University of Vermont, graduating in 1980 with a BS.
Because of Walter’s rugged and handsome appearance, he found an opportunity to become a model, and worked for Wilhelmina Models in New York City. He appeared in numerous magazine ads and traveled extensively to Switzerland, Australia, Italy and the Fiji Islands. Walter had many interests and was a gifted athlete, he loved skiing, cycling, soccer, equestrian competition and was considered a gentleman gardener, and he always appreciated and was able to enjoy the finer things that life had to offer.
Walter is survived by his mother, Mary H. Hutchins of Norwich; two sisters, Molly Hutchins of Woodstock and Rebecca Hutchins of Lexington, Ky; one brother, Jamie Hutchins of Bennington; his former wife Melinda Hackett of New York City, three daughters, Herron, Hazel and Marin; and his longtime companion Vicky Lowry, New York City.
