After considering their budget, the Union Arena board decided it would pursue summer ice at its meeting last Thursday.

(This story was first published in the May 2, 2013 edition of the Vermont Standard.)

By Katy Savage
Standard Correspondent

After considering their budget, the Union Arena board decided it would pursue summer ice at its meeting last Thursday.

Between hiring scorekeepers, referees, part time staff and taking into account tournament expenses, league expenses and the cost to make the ice, the Union Arena will need to generate about $43,000 this year to break even. French said making sure the demand is there before putting ice in is important. Summer ice can cost $1,400 a day, and more if it’s hot and muggy.

Early last week, general manager Dan French had yet to hear from two summer hockey camps of their plans to use the ice. More than a dozen user groups have since confirmed, including the Greg Carter Hockey Camp, Pro Ambitions Hockey Camp and Firecracker Hockey Camp. French projects the user groups will be enough to support the arena costs.

“(Interest) was slow to generate,” French said. “(Leagues) put the pressure on some of their returning teams and people. Competition is intense, not just for ice but for other summer activities.”

French said the Union Arena doesn’t maximize profit, but strives to break even. He said summer ice in the past has been “around that (break-even) number.”

More than 1,000 people, including youths, adults, tournament groups, weekly renters, hockey camps and leagues will be using the arena this summer. Renters rent ice for $210 per hour.

Although more efficient than other ice hockey rinks, making summer ice at the Union Arena is an $8,000 expense. It takes 18 hours to cool the floor to 15 degrees. Last year, crews worked all day and night to have the ice completed in 75 hours. Usually it takes 4-5 days. The longer it takes to make the ice, the more it costs, said French.

Union Arena Board secretary, Jill Kurash, said despite high costs, the numbers have always worked out in the past.

“In other summers, interests had been slow in the beginning, but we’ve always been able to rebound,” she said. “Camps have filled up and other camps have emerged and been able to participate. We have this beautiful facility and this great sheet of ice and we thought it should be used.”

Board chairwoman Virginia Eames said people have come to expect summer ice.

“It’s refreshing,” she said. “It’s something different you can go to the rink in your flip flops in the summer. The kids spend the whole week out there on ice.”

Ice is scheduled at the Union Arena June 23 to July 25 this summer.

Woodstock native Keegan Bradley leads the HP Byron Nelson Championship after shooting a 10-under 60 in the first round.

Bradley leads Charl Schwartzel by three shots. It’s the best round of Bradley’s short career.

Bradley won the 2011 Byron Nelson which propelled him to victory at the 2011 PGA Championship.

Like 2011, Bradley was not in his best form coming into the tournament. Bradley missed the cut at his last two tournaments, including the Players Championship.

His round featured two bogeys,10 birdies and an eagle. His previous best round was a 63. It was also the course record at the TPC Four Seasons Resort course.

The Wasps steamrolled Rutland 15-2 in a game under the lights at home Thursday, setting the stage for a match on home field this afternoon (Monday May 6) against Middlebury.

With the victory, Woodstock is 5-0 while Middlebury, which lost to Essex Junction on Saturday, will bring a 4-1 record into the tussle.

A lot is at stake in the upcoming game. A win for the Wasps would keep them in first place in the Marble Valley League ahead of Mt. Anthony, but also would likely elevate them in the state Division I rankings, from their current fourth place ranking to possibly first or second. Middlebury is ranked third in spite of its’ loss to Essex Junction.

Today’s game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.

By David Miles
Sports Correspondent
HARTLAND — The nine children in the family of John and Donna-Lee Bassette make just enough to field a baseball team — and if that’s what they wanted to play, they’d probably be pretty good at it too.

Instead, the Bassette clan has turned primarily to running and Nordic skiing. As a result, they have left a trail of excellence across the local high school sports landscape for the better part of the last decade.

“I’ve lost count of all the individual and relay state championships that the kids have won in track and skiing,” John Sr. said. “But I know that it’s a very hard thing to do at Woodstock.”

In The Beginning, A Hill

The family’s athleticism has roots from the earliest years. The Bassette family property in Hartland has a nice steep Vermont hill in the backyard.

“I never thought about it at first,” Donna-Lee said. “But the kids always climbed that hill, even in their diapers. They loved to be outside all the time. And that hill develops muscles.

“I didn’t realize it until they would have friends over to play and the friends couldn’t climb the ways our kids would. It was their geography.”

Their running prowess began innocently enough. Eldest son John Jr., now 26 and an infantry officer currently stationed at Fort Drum in upstate New York, took a part-time job in eighth grade about five miles from home.

“I ran to work,” John Jr. said. “Then I began to time myself to see how long it took. I enjoyed it and Dad recommended I consider racing.”

Donna-Lee picks up the tale.

“Everywhere he went he would run,” she said. “At first we weren’t going to get involved. It was just something he did. But as a family we entered the Shamrock Shuffle in Lebanon, most of the kids running in blue jeans.”

The family did a few more races that summer. At one of them, Bruce Franzen, who was coaching cross country in Hartford at the time, saw John Jr. run and learned that he, like all his siblings, was homeschooled. He approached John and suggested that he consider joining one of the area high school cross country teams.

A Sibling And School Rivalry

Beginning in 2002, John Jr, was running both cross country and track for the Yellowjackets. Joel followed his older brother to Windsor and the program grew and, led by the brothers, two state championships for Windsor followed.

James planned to run for Windsor too. But he was taking math classes at Woodstock, and then, Hank Glass, assistant track and cross country coach at Woodstock, began treating James for a knee injury. So he switched over to the Woodstock athletic programs. With these ties already established, it was a more natural fit.

This placed the family in a unique situation. Joel was the Windsor captain in cross country. Younger brother James ran against his brother in cross country.

Come winter, both boys skied together on the Nordic team at Woodstock. (Windsor does not have a Nordic ski program.) But in the spring Joel returned to Windsor for track, while James continued to run for Woodstock.

Tracy Rose, head coach in track and cross country at Woodstock, credits James for being the catalyst that began to turn the track fortunes around at the school.

“It seems like everything started with him,” Rose said. “He was so talented and enthusiastic that he got others excited. He was such a great role model. It was the time when our numbers, for both boys and girls, really started to grow.”

John Jr. had no idea what he had started when he began to race competitively.

“My brothers saw what I was doing and that I was having some success,” John Jr. said. “So they joined in, following my footsteps. By the time I was a junior, Joel was a freshman. So we ran on the team together.”

“And James,” he stated proudly, “was beating high school runners as a middle schooler. He had run a 4:52 mile in sixth grade. He was really something.”

James continued that success with the Woodstock program, winning a pair of individual state championships in the 800-meter run and the 1,500-meter run his senior year, leading the team to a fifth-place finish.

Running was not the only place that his younger brothers followed John Jr. It was his decision to attend West Point after finishing high school. Joel, James and Josh all ultimately pursued their secondary education at the U.S. Military Academy as well.

The Legend Grows

The Bassette family’s greatest athletic success may be in Nordic skiing, however. Eldest brother John Jr. had only taken it up his senior year, but James and Joel began it earlier (and continued with the club team at West Point). Josh excelled at it.

“All four Bassette skiers that I have coached are very dedicated and committed and they work very hard. And the family tradition of excellence seems to mean that each successive sibling gets a little stronger and a little better,” says Nordic skiing coach Nick Mahood. “…Now we have the same thing happening with the girls’ squad. And Kathryn may be another beneficiary of that.”

For now, Elizabeth and Kathryn are preparing for the upcoming track season. They not only helped propel the Woodstock girls to their third consecutive title last spring, the duo outscored all but three of the D-III teams competing. So consider the Bassette Home School as the fourth place finisher in the Vermont High School Track and Field State Championships.

Elizabeth has won the triple jump for three straight years, beginning as a freshman. She also has a pair of long jump titles as well. And last year she added a pair of runner-up finishes in both the 200 meters and the 400 meters.

Rose, meanwhile, steered Kathryn towards some of the events in which Woodstock has not scored many points in previous years. All she did was tie for first in the pole vault, the first year Woodstock has even competed in the discipline, as well as snag first place in the 300-meter hurdles.

Elizabeth switched back from soccer to cross-country after her junior year. “I’m more of a sprinter than a long distance runner,” she says. But this didn’t stop her from being on the team at the State Championship Meet in Thetford.

In that meet as she was approaching the finish line she was stuck between two Harwood runners. With Harwood and Woodstock being neck-and-neck in the team race every point was important. “With Hank’s inspirational speech in my head — and because I’m so intense about all my sports — I thought I can use sprinter’s speed to outpace them at the finish.”

Five yards from the end her legs gave way. She doesn’t remember much after that, other than the EMTs and that it was very traumatic and the family spent much of the rest of the day at the hospital.

Everybody who was there to see the effort and the spill knew that they had witnessed an athlete pushing herself further than she could have imagined.

The Future Looks Bright

For their part, while delighting in their children’s successes, John and Donna-Lee have not pushed them toward sports at all. John had done track, cross-country and Nordic skiing while in high school in Hartford, but Donna-Lee considers herself decidedly unathletic.

“Whatever they do, we want them to excel at,” John said. “We have tried to instill in them a strong work ethic, so that they will work hard and be successful, whether it is academics or athletics or some other field. We want them to be well-rounded.”

After Elizabeth and Kathryn move onto college, 13-year old Matthew, 11-year old Justice and 9-year old Victoria will take up the mantle. Matthew is running with the middle school program in Hartland.

“Another benefit from this is that the kids all coach each other. They get along great, with the older ones helping the younger ones,” Donna-Lee adds.

Rose concurs. “You couldn’t find better, more self-motivated kids. They have been a huge help to me. On days when I haven’t had an assistant coach, I have leaned on all of them to help me. Anything that I ask of them is well received.

“And their work ethic is amazing. Others feed off of it. They really do.”

Teammates feed off this discipline. Younger siblings do as well. “The domino effect in this family can go a long ways,” John Sr. said.

Five of the youngest Bassette children hang on a swing in their Hartland backyard. Clockwise from top right, are Justice (11), Kathryn (15), Victoria (9), Elizabeth (17) and Matthew, who is 13 years old.

By George Calver, Standard Correspondent

The Wasps moved to 2-0 on the season with a lopsided 17-2 road victory over Otter Valley yesterday.

Eight different players scored for Woodstock. Hunter Schmell notched six goals, while Connor McCarthy, James Durand, Graham Melville and Haven Lantz each picked up two. Taylor Lessard, Oliver Kaija and Jackson Wood rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece. Not only was the scoring widespread, but 13 of the 17 scores were assisted goals — something coach Brandon Little was happy about since it showed strong team play.

The Wasps also dominated the ground game, grabbing up 54 of the 74 groundballs during the match.

“It was a really well played game. We picked up a lot of groundballs and had good defense,” said Little. “Evan Sawyer played the whole game in goals and made some good saves. Our longsticks were solid and made good passes—Ed Doton and Jesse Davis got two assists.”

According to the coach, the team also moved the ball and rotated around well in the attack end, something he wanted to work on in practice following the cliffhanger against Burr and Burton.

The Wasps’ next game is at home this Saturday, April 27 at 11 a.m. against St.Albans.

Follow Woodstock's Keegan Bradley as he takes on the best in the world at the Masters, golf's first major of the year.

Follow Woodstock’s Keegan Bradley as he takes on the best in the world at the Masters, golf’s first major of the year.

1:16 p.m. Bradley is 3-over for the day through eight holes and 4-over for the tournament. Still inside the cut line according to Masters.com. Guess the cut projectors think Dustin Johnson and Marc Leishman won’t hold up at 6-under.

11:23 a.m. Bradley double-bogeys his first hole. But even though he’s tied for 57th right now, he’s still within the 10-shot rule for the cut at 3-over. It’s not likely the lead will go much higher due to today’s weather.

Friday, 11:22 a.m. Not a lot of good scores out in the second round of the Masters. Wind gusts of 17 miles per hour are affecting the players. It’s early, but only six of 47 players on the course are under par for their rounds.

6:08 p.m. Keegan’s got three holes left. We’re signing off for the night. Will check in tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. for his second round.

5:52 p.m. Bradley pars the 14th. The picturesque par-5 15th is up next. He’s 1-over for the tournament and tied for 46th. Seven shots behind leaders Marc Leishman and Sergio Garcia.

5:45 p.m. Bradley makes a solid par after almost hitting it in the water on the 13th.

5:23 p.m. Finally, Bradley gets to hit his tee shot. He hits the fairway at the 13th. He’ll be going for this short par 5 in two.

5:08 p.m. Good shot into the 12th but Bradley can’t convert the birdie try.

4:56 p.m. Spoiler alert: He makes this.

4:40 p.m. Bradley pars the 10th. Bradley now heads to the 11th hole — the start of the three holes that make up Amen Corner. Bradley told the Augusta Chronicle the three holes were “shocking” to him the first time he played them:

“It was just everything that I thought it was and a lot more. I’ve never been to a place that’s exceeded the expectations by so much.”

“When you walk up the 11th fairway and you see 12 and 13, it’s shocking, the first time. And I just think that everything that people say about it is true. It’s got a magical feel to it almost, and that’s the part of it that I think you need to put aside when you’re playing the tournament.”

4:23 p.m. Bradley makes his way to the par-4 10th after making the turn in 38. He’s tied for 56th.

4:21 p.m. McIlroy makes a birdie at the ninth hole. Bradley makes a bogey.

4:20 p.m. Bradley actually missed the green long. He chips it long about 25-30 feet by the hole. He’ll need to make that to stay at 1-over.

4:15 p.m. McIlroy hits it behind the hole and runs back to seven feet. Bradley hits the back of the severely sloped back-to-front green. He’ll have a quick putt downhill.

4:13 p.m. McIlroy and Bradley both found the fairway at the ninth hole. Bradley 15 yards past McIlroy.

4:08 p.m. A little change this year. The top 50 — not 44 — and ties will make the cut at the Masters this year. The 10-shot rule (anyone within 10 shots of the lead after Friday) is still in effect.

4:03 p.m. Birdie for Bradley at the eighth hole. He’s 1-over.

4 p.m. Don’t give up on Keegan. If he finishes at 2-over for the day, it wouldn’t be over for him. The worst round by an eventual Masters champion was a 3-over 75 by Craig Stadler in 1982.

3:50 p.m. Bradley’s playing with the same putter, an Odyssey Sabertooth belly putter, that he won the 2011 PGA Championship with. Remember, the USGA and R&A floated a ban of the anchoring style a few months ago. The PGA Tour released a statement that it opposed the ban, leaving the future of the long putter up in the air.

3:37 p.m. McIlroy bogeys the seventh and Bradley pours a par attempt in. The par 5 eighth hole is up next.

3:35 p.m. Bradley’s been the pick of several golf writers and experts this week. He’s coming into the tournament off of four consecutive top 10s.

3:29 p.m. According to a Daily News story, Bradley was the first person to sign in for the Masters last Saturday morning. Bradley doesn’t suffer from a lack of zeal for his sport — it’s hard to forget his Ryder Cup fist pumps.

3:25 p.m. Bradley is four back of McIlroy, who just birdied the sixth.

3:24 p.m. Bradley makes another bogey at the par 3 sixth. He’s 2-over. Bradley has come back from rough starts at Augusta before. He started his 2012 Masters with a double-bogey and shot a 1-under 71.

3:17 p.m. Bradley bogeys the par 4 fifth hole. He’s 1-over for the tournament.

2:46 p.m. McIlroy, at 1-under, misses the green at the fourth hole and chips to four feet. Bradley hit a great shot to 11 feet but couldn’t convert the birdie. They both make par.

2:35 p.m. Bradley pars the third. Up next, the difficult downhill, 249-yard par 3 fourth hole.

2:32 p.m. Bradley’s par at the second hole is his first par in five attempts. He birdied it in every round last year.

2:30 p.m. This is Bradley’s second Masters. He finish tied-27th in 2012 shooting rounds of 71-77-73-69.

2:23 p.m. Want to see what it’s like to play as Bradley at Augusta? Get EA Sports Tiger Woods 14, where Bradley has been added to the stable of golfers in the game.

Here’s promotional poster with Bradley’s digital likeness which came from Bradley’s Twitter page:

2:18 p.m. A par for Bradley at the par-5 second.

2:16 p.m. If you’re lucky enough to score a ticket to the Masters, you’ll be treated to an amazingly affordable and delicious menu. Try the pimento cheese. You won’t be disappointed.

2:12 p.m. Before participating in the Par 3 contest, Bradley played his Wednesday practice round with Masters legends Fred Couples and Tiger Woods.

2:10 p.m. Bradley shot a 2-under in the Masters Par 3 Contest with his sister Madison on the bag. The par 3 contest is played on a special 9-hole course on the property — and it gives a chance for Masters participants to share the Augusta National experience with family and friends. There’s also an interesting fact that the winner of the Par 3 Contest has never won the tournament.

2:05 p.m. Yeah, we know this is a Keegan blog, but in case you’re wondering, Tiger Woods is 2-under through 11 holes. Phil Mickelson is in the group ahead of Bradley and even through his first hole.

2:03 p.m. Bradley has one of the later tee times, so he knows what he has to shoot to get into contention. Right now, Australian Marc Leishman leads the pack at 6-under through 16 holes.

2 p.m. Bradley pars the first hole after missing the green. The first, called Tea Olive, is a 455-yard par 4, and one of the most difficult holes at Augusta National. Up next, the easier par-5 second.

1:55 p.m. Bradley and McIlroy have been paired together a couple times since their epic Ryder Cup match last year — which McIlroy won. They were paired together in the first two rounds of the Shell Houston Open, and Bradley got the better of the Ulsterman, shooting two 2-under par rounds of 70 to McIlroy’s 73-70.

1:34 p.m. Woodstock’s Keegan Bradley tees off in less than a couple of minutes. He’s playing with Rory McIlroy and Swedish golfer Freddie Jacobson.

By David Miles
Sports Correspondent
With three consecutive state titles under their belts, the WUHS girls’ track team is looking to emulate the boys’ Nordic ski team. Despite the graduation of some important performers, especially in the shorter distances, the girls are hoping to replace them and also come home with a fourth Vermont Division III championship.
The boys, meanwhile may have even more holes to fill, with significant graduation losses in distance running, the hurdles and the throwing events. A repeat of last year’s third place finish in the state meet would be a significant accomplishment.
With about 30 girls and 20 boys out for track, Rose and her assistants are juggling a large squad of about 50 student-athletes this year. Rose is delighted to have Tom Avellino as a full-time assistant coach, working primarily with the sprinters.
“This allows me to focus more on the distance runners, which is more my specialty. And it leaves me less scattered overall,” Rose said.
Hank Glass returns to work with the discus and shot put throwers two days a week and Zane Rodriguez once a week with the javelin hurlers. The pole vaulters, who scored points for Woodstock for the first time last season, will again go to Windsor once a week to train down there. It truly does take a village to raise s successful track team.
Distance running should again be a strength for the girls. In the season opening meet at Bellows Falls on Monday, Woodstock swept the top four spots in the 3,000 meters behind Carmen Bango, Denali Balser, Lindsey Stuntz and Claire Spangler. Bango set a new school record with a time of 11 minutes flat.
Anna Ramsey meanwhile won the 1,500 meters, with Stuntz, Balser and Alyssa Rivera also scoring team points for Woodstock. Promising freshmen Rachel Emery and Laura Nickerson finished second and fourth in the 800 meters, with Jaym Henderson and Rivera claiming fifth and sixth.
Sophomore Kathryn Bassette won both the 100- and the 300-meter hurdles. She and Spangler also scored in the pole vault.
The Wasps will probably pick up fewer points in the field events, with very few candidates for the throwing events. Bassette will again compete in the triple jump, as will her older sister Elizabeth, when she is recovered from an injury. Henderson surprised some in the high jump last year, especially with no home pit to train in. She attended a Dick Fosbury (inventor of the famed Fosbury Flop) camp to improve her technique this past summer.
The boys also have some potential in the distance events with strong competitors from the cross country team. Harry Linowski won the 3,000 meters at Bellows Falls with Dylan Stuntz bringing home four more points with his fourth-place finish.
Rose says that it always more difficult to assess the sprinters until actual competition begins. The initial assessment Monday was positive. Tom Baumann opened some eyes with a new school record in the 100 meters with a time of 11.33 seconds in the opening meet.
Newcomers Steve Baumann and Jimmy Johnson and returnee Luke DuPuis also have potential in the shorter distances. Chris Townley showed great improvement throughout last season in the high jump and finished fifth at Bellows Falls. The boys also show promise in the javelin, while Tucker Lemmer continues to get better in the triple jump, as his fifth place result attests.
In the meet at Bellows Falls, the girls finished second and the boys third, with the host school claiming first place on both sides. This was just the first meet of a stronger schedule, including several invitational events that Rose has put together for this year. She intentionally toughened it up to give both teams better competition to push them more through the season.
“We don’t count any meets except the states. The rest are all dress rehearsals. We consider them like putting money in the bank to withdraw at states,” Rose said.
