Staff Report

The Brownsville Community Church is holding a fundraiser Sunday, May 26 at 9 a.m. for the victims of last Monday’s deadly tornado in Oklahoma.

The church, located on Brownsville-Hartland Road, will serve coffee and muffins and take donations for those who lost their homes and possessions when a massive tornado struck the town of Moore, just south of Oklahoma City.

Laurie Hall, one of the organizers of the fundraiser, said the tragedy in Oklahoma touched the church’s congregation.

“We went through the flood and people helped us,” Hall said. “We just thought, let’s give them our support and help them rebuild.”

Hall is working on getting some entertainment for the gathering.

Donations will go to the United MEthodist Committee on Relief special fund for the disaster.

Authorities are now reporting at least 134 injured and two dead in this afternoon’s two explosions near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. One of those dead was an eight-year-old child, according to CNN.
Race organizers issued the following statement this evening:
“The Boston Athletic Association extends its deepest sympathies to all those who were affected in any way by todays events.
Today is a sad day for the City of Boston, for the running community, and for all those who were here to enjoy the 117th running of the Boston Marathon. What was intended to be a day of joy …and celebration quickly became a day in which running a marathon was of little importance.
We can confirm that all of the remaining runners who were out on the course when the tragic events unfolded have been returned to a community meeting area….we would like to thank the countless people from around the world who have reached out to support us today.”

Associated Press

Authorities have arrested a Windsor man accused of entering at least two New Hampshire homes and stealing cash.

Police were called to a home in Hanover early Sunday. They said the homeowners awoke to find a man inside.

WMUR-TV reports the burglar left without a confrontation, but the residents later discovered that cash was missing.

Police said they were called to a similar incident at another home in Hanover a short time later.

They said in both cases, the burglar got in through unlocked doors.

Based on a description of the break-ins, officers arrested 21-year-old Dean Carvalho of Windsor, Vt., and charged him with several counts of burglary.

WEST WINDSOR — A graveside service is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. for Robert “Bob” Byron Smith, Sr., 82, who died at Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center on Friday evening, Oct. 26, surrounded by family members. At Bob’s request, he will be buried in the family plot in Nassau Knolls Cemetery in Port Washington, NY.
He was born Aug. 2, 1930 in Manhasset, NY, a son of Thomas Smull and Alice (Eriksen) Smith.
Mr. Smith attended schools in Great Neck, NY and Port Washington, NY.
He was married to Loretta (Brower) Smith. Bob and Lori made their home in Port Washington where Bob worked at Plandome Country Club for many years. After retiring in 1977 due to ill health, the Smiths moved to West Windsor, VT where he worked at Property Management for numerous local residents.
Before moving to Vermont, Bob was actively involved in the fire service with Flower Hill Hose Company in Port Washington and as a volunteer with the Ambulance Service. He was also actively involved with the Manhasset Bay Sportsmen’s Club in Port Washington.
After moving to West Windsor, VT, he joined the West Windsor Volunteer Fire Department. He was a charter member of the West Windsor Conservation Commission. Although failing health restricted his active involvement with both of these organizations, he was very proud to be a member of them.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Edward, Montroville, Carl and John (infant) and sister Minerva Strockbine.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Bob’s memory to the West Windsor Volunteer Fire Department at PO Box 85, Brownsville, VT 05037
Condolences may be expressed to Mr. Smith’s family in an online guestbook at www.knightfuneralhomes.com

Mitt Romney spent three days in Vermont and pretty much kept to himself — spending most of his time in a friend's West Windsor home, practicing for the presidential debates.

By Tony Marquis, Standard Staff

Mitt Romney spent three days in Vermont and pretty much kept to himself — spending most of his time in a friend’s West Windsor home, practicing for the presidential debates.

It wasn’t until he left for a private TV appearance in New Hampshire about halfway into his time here that anyone in Vermont saw him or spoke to him.

Gubernatorial candidate Randy Brock was one of a handful of Vermonters to speak — or even see — Romney. For about 15 minutes in a corner of LaValley Building Supply in West Lebanon, N.H., Brock had the presidential candidate’s full attention, he said.

“He said that — obviously — he was in Vermont to do his debate preparation and that he enjoyed it and found it relaxing,” Brock said. “And I invited him to come back when he had time to spend some time visiting with Vermonters.”

It wasn’t the first time the two have met. They have mutual friends in Boston. But this was the longest conversation they’ve had, Bock said.

“We talked about some of the issues in the campaign,” Brock said. “He wanted to know what the major issues were in the Vermont campaign.”

Brock told Romney the issues were jobs, the economy and taxes. Brock, a Republican, is running against Gov. Peter Shumlin this November. Brock has been a state senator since 2009 and was the state auditor from 2004-07.

Brock told Romney that Vermont’s 5 percent unemployment rate — the fifth lowest in the nation — is misleading.

“I hear that all the time, but I don’t see that in actuality,” said Brock of unemployment.
