SOUTH ROYALTON — Family and friends are invited to a graveside memorial service at the Tunbridge Village Cemetery on Saturday, May 27, at 10 a.m. for Dale Arnold Stender, 69, who died April 10 at the Hanover Terrace Health and Rehab Center in Hanover, New Hampshire.
He was born March 11, 1948, in Randolph, son of Charles and Marjorie (Adams) Stender.
Dale grew up in Royalton and attended school there. In May 1966 he joined the army and served until April 1979. He served in Belgium working for the NATO-SHAPE Headquarters; Germany; tours in Vietnam and Korea, where he met Young Sun Kim and they were married from 1975-1991. They had two daughters, Barbara Jean and Amy Louise. Before the girls were born the couple returned to the U.S. and resided for a time on Dairy Hill in South Royalton. The family eventually moved to Hartford village and purchased a home there.
Dale was an excellent carpenter and spent most of his working career in that field. He took one year from working and attended Vermont Technical College. In 2004 his working career was diminished due to long-term disabilities.
Dale was an avid reader, sometimes a whole book in one night. He had an active social life with a select group of friends from all over the country. He especially maintained a 12-year friendship with Connie Salewsky of Michigan until his death, although they never personally met.
Dale is survived by his daughter Barbara of Hartford, and granddaughter, Ripley, and daughter, Amy of South Royalton; two brothers Bruce and Pat (Furman) Stender of West Hartford and Ronald and Janet (Cook) Stender of Sharon; and several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his beloved cat “Bags”.
He was predeceased by his father, Charles Stender in 1995.
Memorial donations can be made to the Royalton Memorial Library, P.O. Box 129, South Royalton, 05068, or the South Royalton Rescue Squad, PO Box 204, South Royalton, 05068.
Arrangements are in care of Boardway and Cilley Funeral Home, Chelsea.
